With the start of the new year (2018), Oregon DMV fees increased. These fees are determined by the DMV — not us — and are in addition to the price of the car. When you are purchasing a car from us, we are happy to explain all of the fees and write them out for you. Many customers are also able to roll the fees due into the loan amount, if you are financing a car.
Here are the current DMV fees as of January 1, 2018:
- Title change fee: $93
- Registration (for two years): $112. If you live in Multnomah County, there is an additional $38 fee bringing the total to $150 for two years of registration.
- 21-day trip permits have increased to $32. A trip permit is usually needed by a Washington resident who needs to drive their recently-purchased car to a Washington DMV office in order to transfer the title and pay the registration fees applicable in their home state.
Other fees that have stayed the same but that our customers often encounter when buying a car:
- New plates: $24
- DEQ inspection fee (every two years): $21
When you are purchasing a car from us, we are happy to explain all of the fees and write them out for you. If you are an Oregon resident, we can also collect and submit the DMV fees on your behalf if we are going to complete and submit the title change and/or registration paperwork for you. We do charge a fee to do this (and, no, that fee has not gone up!) but it will allow you to skip the trip to the DMV on the day of the sale and save a significant amount of time at the end of the car sale process.
Please let us know if you have any questions!
